Our generation is plagued by false teachings. The sad thing is most believers are not even aware that the perpetrators of this false teachings are false; probably because these men are popular and respected by many because of their ‘achievement’ in life. The truth still remains that longevity is not a yard stick for rightness. You don’t believe a teaching because of the personality of the teacher neither do you believe because the teacher has been known to always say the truth. You must keep searching to see whether what he teaches lines up with God’s word or not. Also, your experience must not validate the Scripture, your experience must bend to God’s word.

One of the things Jesus Christ warned us against about the last day is that deceptive teachers and prophets are here. Be not deceived, no false teacher or prophet will say he is false. You cannot detect them by their ministerial profile; you must be sound Biblically and have discernment. You must prove everything they say and then hold fast to what is true.

It is in the light of this, I want you to journey with me as we examine together the issue of curses and generational curses. This is not targeted at anyone but I’m indebted to God, to defend the faith that men lose their lives to defend. My heart also goes out to people who are out there who have been under the bondage of fear because of this erroneous teaching. I believe God who delivered me from these false teachings will also do the same for you in Jesus’ name. Amen.
What is a curse?

According to Noah Webster dictionary, a curse is to utter a wish of evil against one; to imprecate evil upon; to call for mischief or injury to fall upon; to execrate. A curse is imprecation which is an act of calling down a curse that invokes evil.

It is believed that this wish is not just a mere wish most time. This wish is aided by some diabolic power. When Goliath cursed David, he did that in the name of his gods (1 Samuel 17:43). When Balak called Balaam to come and curse the Israelite, he knew Balaam had some supernatural power to do that.

Can A Christian Be Cursed?

In answering this question, we start by defining who a Christian is. A Christian is not just someone that is regular in church services or someone that just professes to be one.

To able to understand Biblically who are Christians, it is good we apply the ‘Law of First mention’. This law says for us to understand a word or doctrine from the Bible we need to find the first time the word was used and try to understand the concept of it from there first; this will then form a foundation upon which we can study to understand the word or the doctrine.

The word Christians or Christian appears only three times in the King James Version of the Bible. The first time it was used was in Acts 11:26

Then departed Barnabas to Tarsus, for to seek Saul: And when he had found him, he brought him unto Antioch. And it came to pass, that a whole year they assembled themselves with the church, and taught much people. And the disciples were called Christians first in Antioch.” Acts 11:25-26

You can see that idea of this name is almost lost in the church because now everyone you see claim to be a Christian. It was never a religion; those that were called Christians were disciples of Christ. A Christian is a follower of Christ. This followership does not mean pursuing someone from behind but to accept the leadership or the principles of another. Jesus Himself gave the condition for followership (Matthew 16:24-25, Luke 9:23-27).

A Christian is someone that has embraced Jesus Christ as his Saviour and Lord. Jesus Christ said it is not just in professing Him as Lord, but that profession must be accompanied by a lifestyle of obedience to God (Matthew 7:21). Someone who has embraced the cross of Christ- whose will is buried in Christ.

With this definition of a Christian as a background, a Christian cannot be cursed. It does not matter the challenges you are faced with in life. If you are walking in the will of God, you cannot be cursed. The false teachers have made us to believe every challenge in life is as a result of a curse. For example, delay in marriage, delay in child bearing, failure in exams. They even called some ‘near-success syndrome’. I guess if Joseph were to be living in our days, they would have told him he needs deliverance because looking at his life, everything was just working against him. But if you are a student of the Bible you will know that in everything that happened to him God was working. God was the one that sent him to Egypt and it was not just that his brothers sold him (Psalm 105:16-24).

What the enemy tries to do is to make you believe that you are under a curse, because if he can make you believe such lie. One of the dangers of this teaching or any other false teachings is once you believe, it will become your experience. This deception at times comes in dreams; ranging from eating in the dreams, sex in the dream down to being pursued by animals etc. And these false prophets are feeding fat on your ignorance with the book they have written on interpreting such dreams.
